My wife and I have always loved to travel, to see parts of the world we have only read about and to meet people of different cultures and backgrounds. In Icelandic, we still use an old phrase describing those who have sailed (meaning travelled) as those who have a good education. This is how we feel about our travels; one can learn so much about the world when meeting its different people.
Our children and their spouses know how we love to read about Italy, Italian wines and foods, so when I turned 70, they invited us with them to a wonderful part of Italy, Piedmonte. We stayed at Casa Nuova, close to the beautiful town of Bubbio and the origins of our favorite wines, the Barolos and Barbarescos.
Casa Nuova was perfect for the entire family, cool and spacious in the summer heat with a beautiful pool and outside eating area that brought tears to our eyes, the view was so impressive. The location provided a perfect spot from which to take longer and shorter drives, to the beach or into the hills of endless vineyards and culinary adventures.
We look forward to our next visit to this wonderful and welcoming part of Italy, where we found that despite language barriers, we could communicate with the locals just fine. Genuine warmth and hospitality is always understandable in any language.
